How It Works - Endion Hive

Architecture Overview

Endion Hive is a peer-to-peer encrypted swarm storage system. Nodes (clients and servers) cooperate to store and replicate encrypted blocks of data. No node knows the content of the blocks it stores.

Drives are self-replicating across the swarm, providing redundancy and resilience. The system can be deployed entirely within a private network or across the Internet.

Key Components

Clients: User devices that create, modify, and replicate drives. Each client maintains a local encrypted cache.
Replication Servers: Optional servers that provide additional storage capacity and redundancy. Ideal for securing data in hardened environments (Linux/BSD).
Private Rings: An advanced access control layer. Only users with a valid ring certificate can access drives assigned to that ring.

Data Flow

Users create a drive and add data.
Data is split into blocks and encrypted locally.
Encrypted blocks are identified by content hash and distributed to other nodes.
Drives are automatically replicated across the swarm.
Changes to drives are propagated and merged securely.

Security Model

End-to-end encryption — blocks are encrypted locally and transmitted over SSL connections.
Each node uses a certificate issued by Endion CA — prevents MITM attacks.
Private Rings enforce additional certificate-based access control.
Blocks are content-addressed — nodes do not know what they store or transfer.

Defense Against Exfiltration and Ransomware

Exfiltration-resistant: Local caches store only encrypted data. Capturing local disk or network traffic yields no usable information.
Ransomware-resilient: If a node is compromised, it can be wiped clean and safely rebuilt. Data remains available from other replicated nodes and secure servers.
Hardened servers: Replication servers can be deployed on secure Linux or BSD platforms, providing high-assurance anchor points for data recovery.
